Founded in 2008 by Geko Jones and Uproot Andy, the NYC tropical dance party ‘Que Bajo’ has quickly found itself at the center of the modern global dance music scene. From its home at the well known downtown Manhattan club Santos Party house, ‘Que Bajo’ has opened up a space, not only for the neo cumbia and tropical bass music that was its original focus, but for the coming together of all types of new musical trends emenating from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa, as well as Europe and the US, and hosts many of the young artists and Djs on the cutting edge of these new genres, such as Toy Selectah, Maluca, Zizek, Radioclit, Bersa Discos, DJ Rekha, Choc Quib Town, Jahdan Blackamoore and 77Klash.

UPROOT ANDY
Uproot Andy is a Brooklyn based DJ and Producer making melodic and bass heavy music for the dance hall informed by the musical traditions that migrate to New York along with people from around the globe. Considered among the leaders of the new global bass music Uproot Andy has releases on Bersa Discos and ZZK Records and has produced remixes for Thievery Corporation, Radioclit and The Very Best, Poirier, MC Gringo and Mc Nem, and Forro in the Dark among others. Andy is a co-founder of the new cumbia and Afro-Latin party Que Bajo and is a regular at the Dutty Artz label's NY Tropical parties, as well as a weekly resident at the balkan gypsy club Mehanata Bulgarian Bar. As a DJ he has shared bills with such renowned artists as Diplo and Major Lazer, Maluca, Toy Selectah, 77 Klash, Radioclit and The Very Best. His Guacharaca Migration mix was called 'one of the best mixtapes of 2008' by New York Magazine.

GEKO JONES
Geko Jones is a Brooklyn-based DJ and producer. He is a founding member of both the New York Tropical and Que Bajo?! party franchises in New York. He is also a partner and co-owner of the Dutty Artz record label with producer Matt Shadetek and DJ /Rupture. His mixes span the tropical hemispheres and collage together globally sonic hours of dancefloor mayhem. Renowned by top DJ's and producers of the digital cumbia scene in Latin America and European bass-pundits alike, Jones is one of the select few DJ's pushing forward the Latin agenda in a world wide tropical bass scene. The past five years have found him sharing a booth or collaborating with a long roster of A-list globalistas like Uproot Andy, Jahdan Blakkamoore, Soot Records, Stereotyp, Radioclit, ZZK, Maluca, Dub War, Toy Selectah and more. Whether it's tearing the roof off an outdoor festival, getting the crowd bubbling on an illegal boat party in Bushwick, conjuring up the next great sound, or racking up air miles from Brooklyn to Bogota, Geko Jones commands the dancefloor! BlackBook's Steve Lewis: reOPENed Fridays (with Just Blaze) is "Joyous Mayhem"

It's a miracle that one can work in the nightlife industry for as long as Steve Lewis has while maintaining the faculty to speak about it coherently, let alone with the articulation and insight he displays in his BlackBook Magazine column. Lewis is known as the interior designer and erstwhile operator of numerous unhyperlinkable clubs and restaurants throughout the country including Marquee, Tao (Las Vegas), Butter and Aspen Social Club. Today he heads The Nightlife Preservation Society, an organization that advocates on behalf of nightclubs and venues in the face of policies that threaten the culture. In his newest BlackBook installment he shines light on the prejudiced door policies sweeping the scene like a malaise, and provides Santos as the welcome juxtaposition. Specifically, he praises our REOPENED Friday residency as the gold standard in partying despite the post-Jim Crow outlook.

The acclaimed RE-OPEN-ED now features DJ Just Blaze and DJ Soul Upstairs with DJs Gravy, Max Glazer and MC Micro Don downstairs. Just Blaze (from the press release) is “the multi-platinum producer and remixer who has laid tracks for Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Beastie Boys, Mariah Carey, MF Doom, Janet Jackson, Jay Electronica, Kanye West and many more.” It’s classic hip-hop, house, soul classics, electronic disco and absolutely fantastic. The crowd is a dance crowd, mixed and hot. That’s writers speak to say that there are more non-white people there than in most of the so called “great clubs” around town.

This Santos Party is fantastic and I’m going to try to be a regular. I advise you to be there as well. Downstairs I caught my old friend and mainstay Spa Club DJ Max Glazer with Micro Don [and DJ Gravy]. It was joyous mayhem as girls way too hot for me grabbed me and dragged me to the dancefloor. It wasn’t pretty from there, although it made people laugh--and how can that be bad? Santos Party House is what is left of the days of yore. Our complaints, laments and nostalgic waxings are easily answered by their Friday night party.

This wouldn't be the first time that the Godfather of Nightlife has shown us some love. Nevertheless, it would do us all well to heed his advice.

While certain talking heads bemoan the eclipsing of a white majority in the heartland, we at Santos are applauding the Latin and Caribbean invasion of electro. Que Bajo?! is the embodiment of the turning tides, a party that features the finest in cumbia, electro, dancehall and other heavily bassed tropical sounds. On the tables are residents Uproot Andy, of Argentina's globe-trotting ZiZeK crew, and Geko Jones, from the Dutty Artz family for riddim. Joining the will be VJ Shantell Martin, whose use of real-time light-drawing creates a unique and subversive atmosphere, perfect for the cutting-edge music.

OPEN, the invincible Friday night presented by resident DJ and hip-hop polymath Q-Tip has been shaking asses and winning awards ("Best DJ Night" - PAPER MAG) since its inception a year and a half ago, and we decided party people were a half a year overdue for a "thank you." So we've stacked the weekly bill with invincible headlining DJ's, including the temporal genius Questlove, [edit]urban-electro prodigy A-Trak , underground staple Stretch Armstrong [/edit], and the key innovator of turntable protocol Grandmaster Flash. Leading the pack this Friday will be DJ Scratch, who has created keynote beats for the likes of EPMD, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J and many more. Also, we've refined our reggae game in the basement with the help of DJ Gravy, making Friday night at Santos the ultimate destination for Carribean sound as well.
