LOVE OF DIAGRAMS
While much of the indie scene has become a rat race for pop hooks and advertisement-friendly pseudo-jingles, Melbourne’s Love of Diagrams presents a refreshingly pure and gritty brand of alternative rock that ties unnerving noise textures to pulsating post-punk grooves. While they enjoy flattering comparisons to Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and Siouxsie and the Banshees, their tendencies towards no-wave repetition give them a groundbreakingly distinct sound.

In 2003, two years after their formation, Love of Diagrams earned their international acclaim with the release of their album The Target Is You, setting them off on a tour-blazing spree. Since then they have played with and supported Death Cab For Cutie, Sonic Youth, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Stereolab and Les Savy Fav to name a few. 2007’s Mosaic was produced by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma), and their new album Nowhere Forever has been likened to “giddy textural rush that feels like watching a gaseous planet rotate with time-lapsed poignancy” (Mess And Noise). Santos is happy to be square in the path of the most tidal of no-wave.

HOLIDAY SHORES
The jaunty, off-kilter garage pop of Holiday Shores is packaged in layers of windy effects and echoes, creating their own harmonies and overtones as the music marches along. The mixture of demented textures and bright, summery songwriting results in a thrilling, unique performance for the seasoned post-rocker.

JAPANSTER
Electro-rock composer Japanster takes the intensity of the US underground indie scene and fuses it with a European electro aesthetic resulting in a dancefloor-rocking whirlwind of tuneful jams. A prolific remixer and producer, his music rocks body and mind equally.

White Christmas Extravaganza!

Photobucket
Photographs by Danielle Lobosco.

It snowed in New York yesterday and it was a White Christmas at Santos last night thanks to Mr Patrick Duffy, Andrew Buckler, GMHC and many more. The night was speckled with performances and appearances from Lady Bunny, Jasper James, Michele Balan, Angelique Ali, Sequinette and Pixie Harlots. Acroback performed suspended from the ceiling and Deborah fucking Harry sang a few Blondie hits, including The Tide Is High and Dreaming before being joined by a full Choir to sing Christmas songs.

. . . LIQUID LIQUID!

Photobucket
Photographs by Danielle Lobosco.

Wednesday night's show was one for the History books!

80's post-punk band, Liquid Liquid, emerged from the abyss and played an ultra rare set to a packed house at Santos. I don't think I've ever seen so many cymbals and percussive devices on a stage before. Everything from old fire alarms to chimes and xylophones to cut out brass and bongos.

This shit hasn't gone down in a longgg time but you would never know by the way these guys played together. And with a crowd like the one at Santos it might be safe to say that it won't be the last we'll see of them. I hope.

WTF Happened Tuesday?!

Photobucket
Photographs by Danielle Lobosco.

High kicks, balloon heads, rapping twins, monster shamans and bandmates beating the crap out of each other. Yeah, it was just another Tuesday at Santos.

Hearts of Darknesses, Bad Brilliance, Grand Buffet and CX Kidtronik kicked off the first WTF Tuesday!? hosted by our ringmaster, Andrew WK, at the Official Girl Talk Afterparty.

But not to worry, you have another chance to see them. They're coming back for a very special evening on November 29th with Marnie Stern and 18th Dye! I won't feel bad for you if miss this one.

Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt Invaded Santos!

Photobucket
Photographs by Danielle Lobosco.

Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt played Santos during CMJ and they brought a GIANT inflatable Santa Arch! I can't think of a better way to enter a dance party then under an enormous lit up Santa with outstretched arms!

It was absolutely impossible to distinguish band members from audience members because the mic got passed around so much. Everyone was dressed up in such crazy gear you would think it was WTF Tuesday. Apparently there was either one person in the group or like 22, I can't remember.

Lissy Trullie + Friends play Santos!

Photobucket
Photographs by Danielle Lobosco.

Remember that song "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys? Of course you do, you were probably born in the 80's. You were also probably too young to go see Tom Cruise in Cocktail but I'd bet good money that you owned the single, if not the soundtrack.

I'm pretty sure Adam Green had both because he sang Kokomo at least 4 times Monday night at Santos after Lissy Trullie's beautiful set. He also sang his mambo rendition of "Happy Birthday " an equal number of times to people in the crowd who swore it was their birthdays.

Rumple Strips opened to a full crowd. They sounded so good that if they were Britney Spears I would have assumed they were miming to a record.

But back to Lissy, who played a brilliant set. Yes, kids, she really is hipper than hip. So hip in fact that there probably isn't even a word for it. She had the crowd in her hands though her carefree and calm demeanor suggested she wasn't even aware of the fact. Gotta love her.

Mark Ronson manned the decks during the after party while Kirsten Dunst shuffled between the upstairs lounge and the dance floor.

. . . Even more photos on Patrick McMullan

The pioneering "cyber/fetish/gender-hacking" party CLICK + DRAG, which ushered out the 20th Century in style, returned last night at Santos on a large scale!

Covering both floors, the evening featured performances and installations by Venus de Mars, Vangeline Theater, The Pixie Harlots, FX by Basil Twist and Rob Roth. The decks were covered by DJs including Xris Smack, Sammy Jo, Johanna Constantine, Johnny Dynell and the Faerie DJ Posse.
